chrome.browserAction is undefined (Manifest V3)
What you see
Uncaught TypeError: Cannot read properties of undefined (reading 'onClicked')
Why it happens
In Manifest V3, chrome.browserAction and chrome.pageAction were merged into chrome.action. Code ChatGPT wrote for version 2 still calls the old names.
The fix
- rightsocket does this Renames chrome.browserAction and chrome.pageAction to chrome.action, and the manifest keys to "action".
What changed, and when
- 24 July 2025, Chrome: Chrome 138: Manifest V2 extensions disabled for all users on all channels, with no option to turn them back on. Chrome 139 then removed the enterprise policy that kept them working.
